Mini Memorial Day Mini Vacation

Or as we would have said this weekend MMDMV.
This past weekend was spent making acronyms, doing barracuda impressions, bronzing ourselves on the beach, eating, drinking and taking way too many pictures to document it all.
Our weekend started in Hoboken where Sarah, Matt (aka Fink), Adam and I drove to meet Kendra and take the PATH into the city.

We had dinner at a tasty little italian restaurant on the upper westside and then headed around the block to Blondies, which was Sarah and Matt's first visit to the bar associated with our Alma Mater, Michigan State. Our friend Skippy who was in the city for the weekend was able to PR his friends into meeting us at Hard Rock in Times Square instead of the super trendy (i.e. expensive bar) they were going to go to. After a very bizzare subway ride downtown (i.e. a drunken bum singing and another man that squeezed into the seat next to me to eat an entire bucket of fried chicken in the 10 minute ride), we finally made it to Hard Rock, however, later than anticipated.

We had planned on not staying out too late as all of us had worked a full day and had gotten up early but we all suprised ourselves when we didn't get back to my apartment until 5:00am!
On Saturday, despite not getting to bed until 5:30am, we woke up at 10:00am to head out to Long Island to spend the day at the beach near her house and the night hitting the Port Jeff bars.
We ended up at the beach around 1:00pm, which gave us enough time to get some sun. The beach was not as sandy as I expected, although much more low-key and quiet than the usual Jersey Shore scene. After the beach we all headed back to Kendra's to get cleaned up and ready for dinner. We went to a small brick over pizzaria down the street from her apartment where we kicked off the night with pizza and salad before stopping for ice cream on the way home. After popping in a movie and relaxing for a bit it was obvious that Fink, Sarah and Adam were not going to make it out that night as they were already falling asleep at 10:00pm. It ended that just Kendra and I went out, which worked out well so I could be her "wing man." We we unsuccessful at finding any quality specimens for Kendra but ended up being extremely successful at not being sober. I don't know how namy people we drunk dialed that night, but it sure helped with the long walk home.
On Sunday morning we got up and headed to another beach near Kendra's apartment. I'm super jealous because we learned this weekend that Kendra has 3 beaches within 10 minutes of her house. The 2nd beach we went to wasn't very crowded at first but became more crowded once the weather started to shape up. Adam and I went in the water and threw the football around with Matt. The water was probably only 50 degrees or so, but you only had to go thigh deep before it became shallow again and you had were on a huge sandbar. People were playing volleyball and just wading in the water hundreds of feet off shore.
After the beach we went back to Kendra's apartment to shower and get ready for dinner. This night we choose a small local Mexican restaurant. The food was good and they had tasty refried beans, however the service had a lot to be desired. After dinner we headed back to Kendra's and enjoyed some drinks and music on her patio before heading out to the bar. Tonight everyone made it out and was a great final night to our vacation weekend.

On Monday we left Kendra's apartment around noon, worried that we would hit tons of traffic from the Hampton's on the return trip to New Jersey. We actually made it home in record timing and I spent the remainder of the day in my nice air conditioned apartment recovering from a great weekend.
The whole weekend felt like vacation complete with great food, great drinks, gorgeous beaches, and great friends. It's so crazy how life works out and that 5 people that were friends in college would all live near each other on the East Coast. It's so nice to have friends out here to do fun stuff with or do nothing with. We make our own fun and don't need more than a camera and a fan to have a great time.

Nice, Relaxing Weekend

This past weekend, the weekend before Memorial Day, was always the first weekend down the shore. Not having the tiny house in Manasquan as our summer retreat is going to be difficult, but this past weekend proved that there's plenty to do and great friends to do things with.
On Friday Adam and I had a fairly low key evening. We met some friends at a small local bar and only stayed out until 11:30pm or so.
On Saturday morning Kendra drove in from Long Island. We went over to Fink and Sarah's house for dinner and had another low key, but relaxing evening. We started with wine and snacks and then had a very delicious meal. We had London broil, salad, pasta salad, corn on the cob, and baked potatoes. After dinner we went to a local ice cream shop and further gorged ourselves with more delicious goodness. After returning back to Sarah and Fink's we all put our pajamas on and played a couple rounds of Apples to Apples before falling asleep by 11:00pm... we're getting so old!!!
On Sunday morning we headed West to the Delaware Water Gap for some hiking. This was my 2ND trip and Kendra's 1st but I do think I did much better than the first time. We ended up hiking for about 3.5 hours and got a very decent work out. We took a different trail than the first time, and saw some amazing views! It was great to get out and do something that didn't require spending lots of money and also provided "natural" entertainment.
I don't know what it is but I feel so mature when I go hiking. It's on a different page then spending the day at the bar... I guess it's nice to know I can do both :)

These are a few of my favorite things...

As I was enjoying buffalo wings and beer on Tuesday night with Adam and Walt I thought of some of my favorite things about summer:

The feeling of sand between my toes and sun on my face

Tailgating before a concert

Walking outside on a warm night eating an ice cream cone

Driving with all the windows down and letting the wind whip my hair around while listening to some of my favorite music... or driving with Walt in his convertible where I always know I can find some quality country tunes :)

Sleeping in on Saturday letting the cool breeze and summer noises wake me up

Eating at a restaurant with outdoor seating and a great view (i.e. Hoboken or NYC)

Taking long drives to Port Jefferson to visit Kendra and enjoying her new balcony... it's going to be even better now that it's warm

Corona w/ a lime

Cake Batter Ice Cream

Getting a tan

I'm getting so excited... it's too bad this weekends forecast isn't looking very promising :(

Running on empty...

To say I'm running on fumes is an understatement. In the past two weeks I've been to Columbus, Detroit, back to Columbus, back to NJ and have taken two more day trips to Columbus (in and out same day).
Two weekends ago I was back in MI for a early Mother's Day visit. While home I was able to visit some friends I hadn't seen in a long time. Sometimes I wish I lived closer to my family and friends back in Detroit. I really enjoy living with Adam and being close to Kendra, Fink and Sarah, but sometimes I just really miss my old friends. I'm sure that my pre-menstrual state didn't help, but I couldn't help but shed a couple tears driving back to Columbus after a great weekend back I MI.
Being busy all week at work makes the weeks FLY by. Just this past weekend Adam and I headed to Rochester, NY for a weekend with his family. His brother was back in town for the weekend and we were able to celebrate Mother's Day with his Mom, so it was nice to be around at least one of our parents for the Holiday. We drove back yesterday afternoon with a new couch and chair. We got rid of both our love seats and se-up our new living room furniture last night. It looks great and I can't wait to relax at home tonight.
This week doesn't seem to be as hectic thus far. I really just want to relax and catch up on some of my "stories" (tv shows) that I've missed the past two weeks.
On another high note, Adam and I have already started to book some concerts for the summer. We're going to see Kenny Chesney w/ Sugarland in July, and just this morning we were able to get tickets for Jimmy Buffet at Madison Square Garden in September. Now that we don't have a shore house hogging up our weekends we'll be able to do more fun things. I'm thinking about a weekend in Wildwood, or a weekend trip to Maine (I've never been but it seems like a nice Summer vacation spot).
Although I'm super tired, this weather has got me super excited for summer and focusing on that has definately helped me get through the past couple weeks.

Work

Work has been pretty chaotic this week. I haven't gotten home before 8:00pm since Thursday. I'm exhausted and need a vacation.
How many more years until I can retire?
